We met a wonderful couple from Bluffton, South Carolina at the
Mt. Mitchell Arts and Crafts event in August of 2004. They were truly our "angels" of the event, purchasing Mt.
LeConte in the Clouds from us for their mountain home.
Later in the year, they contacted us about creating a custom place
for their home along the Carolina coast. Wanting the design to reflect the beauty of the area, we chose the blue
heron as the center piece of the design. Over the course of our planning, this design, which has an official
name of Carolina Marshlands was loving referred to as "Big Blue".

Construction
Even though this is a very large "finished" piece
of glasswork, almost 5 feet across, all of the hundreds of individual pieces are very small. Due to the
amount of detail we designed into "Big Blue" this piece is not leaded like so many of our projects but is copper foiled.

Each piece of glass is individually cut or "broken"
then precisely ground to fit into the design. They are then wrapped with copper foil, burnished down for smoothness
and then soldered into place.
Of couse, once the front side is finished, the soldering
gets repeated on the back.

The completed glass is then thoroughly cleaned and
cleaned again.
All of the glass for "Big Blue" was carefully chosen
to reflect the beauty of a winter marsh,
with cattails and grasses in hues of amber, green
and wine.
With a beautiful, custom built, cherry frame, thanks
to Randy, this has truly
become one of our very favorite projects.
Having the opportunity to work with such wonderful
"friends" as Glendon and Palmer was truly a
bonus.
We wanted to show you exactly where "Big Blue"
has landed.
Installed and happy in his new home, Big
Blue shows it's true colors in the sunlight of this bathroom window.
